This community was an unnamed parish of Chichester until 1782, when residents John Cram, William Chase and Jonathan Leavitt Jr. petitioned lawmakers on the behalf of their neighbors who wanted their community incorporated; the request was granted soon thereafter. Pittsfield was named in honor of William Pitt, a British prime minister who had sided with the colonies during the American Revolution. Pittsfield is the place that Gov. Hiram A. Tuttle, who died in 1911, called home. |
